Bashō was a Phenologist

If Proust was a neuroscientist, Bashō was a phenologist.
A cicada shell;
it sang itself
utterly away.
A snowy morning--
by myself,
chewing on dried salmon.
A monk sips morning tea,
it's quiet,
the chrysanthemum's flowering.
---three haiku poems by Bashō
